Most new structures feature "quake-resistant" designs, but Californian building codes remain pitifully ;lax, allowing, for example, buildings to be constructed directly along fault lines. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, the annual ;budget for possible earthquake emergencies is laughably inadequate. It's i just a matter of who'll be left alive to see the joke. By comparison, Mid-Westerners tend not to even consider the possibility of a quake, despite the proximity of the New Madrid fault and the quakes of 1811-1812. Well, there's certainly something to be said for this apparent "ignorance is bliss" philosophy, because the vast majority of Missouri buildings have no resistance to earthquakes whatsoever.
