We hoped it would be well received. We had no idea it would pull in more mail—and draw more phone calls—than any other issue of this magazine in the 14 years of its existence. Both regular Gallery readers and representatives from Vietnam veterans' organizations from around the country took the trouble to get in touch. All that attention gave us an idea: Let's give Vietnam vets a forum. Let's not advise or praise or counsel them—let's give them a place to talk about their lives in their words. And let's pay them for it. And we will: $500—for memoirs, experiences, revelations. Here are the details: Only Vietnam-era vets are eligible; all manuscripts must be nonfiction, no more than 2,500 words in length; all manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced. We're calling it "Heroes: The Vietnam Experience" and it will be a regular monthly feature starting in the March 1986 Gallery. Send your submissions to: HEROES EDITOR GALLERY MAGAZINE 800 SECOND AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10017 A necessity we must warn you about: There will be only 12 slots a year for this feature, so we'll be forced to return many of the submissions. And please remember that no submissions will be returned if they are not accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope. If you're a Vietnam vet, we hope to hear from you. We're going to get the word out to as many vets' organizations as possible. And we're counting on you to let other vets know about this opportunity to share their experiences with an audience that is both interested and large. We're not necessarily looking for "war stories." What we're looking for is for the writers of the "Heroes" features to pass along the essence of an experience of theirs. It might have occurred in a tour of duty in 1965.... It might have happened just last week. It might be the effects of Vietnam on someone you never got to know. ...It might have been an event that changed you profoundly—and forever. Whatever it was, we'd like to hear from you. Thanks again. —The Editors
