L. Mencken once wrote, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." Undoubtedly, as witnessed by the buying of 3-D glasses, the hula hoop, and Spiro T. Agnew. Yet ultimately, there's a streak of good common sense in the American people: "You can't fool all of them all of the time," as the Great Emancipator pointed out. When we select what articles we print, we rely on the good sense of our readers. We don't write down to you or try to protect you from yourself or tell you that everything is always coming up roses. In this issue, we investigate the extreme radical Right Wing in America today. It is not a pretty picture. You can read about Richard Girnt Butler, the 66-year-old leader of the Aryan Nations, and Kerry Noble, head of a paramilitary Nazi-like outfit called the Covenant, the Sword, and the Arm of the Lord. They are anti-Semites and consider blacks subhuman. There is an article on WWII Nazis who have been employed by American intelligence services. You will find an interview with David Duke, ex-Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, a most polished exponent for his cause. But hate is hate is hate, no matter its package. We did not exactly like what we found, but if we only printed what everyone thought was honorable and nice and sweet, then we would be drawing an unreal world. Extreme fanatics do exist in this society, their numbers apparently growing, and by publishing their stories, we're leaving it up to the reader to judge them and their possible threat. Ultimately, we believe in your good sense. We believe in the First Amendment and that we must occasionally cover views that we personally find repugnant. All of which makes for life in a republic. It also makes for a magazine we can take pride in, and it makes for everything that the lunatic fringe is dead set against. —The Editors
