As we at Gallery approach the milestone of our 25th anniversary, we have a lot to look back on—and to look forward to. Since November 1972, when Gallery's first issue hit the stands running, you, our readers, have kept us going strong. And today, more than 300 issues later, you will be choosing—from among 13 beautiful women—the lady who will be the special 'Girl Next Door of the Year' who'll help us kick off our next quarter century (see pictorial beginning on page 96, and find your ballot on page 102). In fact, this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the 'Girl Next Door' contest: When we started it back in the late '70s, we had only an inkling of how popular the 'Girl Next Door' contest would become all across the nation. The competition has become almost universally known, has been widely imitated, and has inspired some of the most beautiful women in the world to reveal themselves to you in the hopes of winning the prestigious 'GND' title. To date, we have had 20 yearly winners, over 250 monthly winners, and over 4,000 entrants in the monthly contest, not to mention the tens of thousands of runners-up who sent in entry photos that we simply didn't have the space to print. Over the years we have had many memorable 'Girls Next Door'. Our first yearly winner back in 1977, Joan from Fort Wayne, Indiana, first appeared in Gallery as a monthly winner in the September 1976 issue. Her grand prize: $5,000. This year's lucky winner will walk away with $25,000. Among the most popular are Evie, our 1980 yearly winner; Mattie Kay, who took the 1982 title; Nikki, who earned 1985's honors; and Annmarie, chosen to wear the crown in 1989. Of course, you voted Brandi, our 1992 queen, the 'GND' of all time. Your choice this year will also be remembered in years to come, so don't delay! Send your ballot right away! To properly usher in this auspicious year, we will behaving a once-in-a-lifetime 25th anniversary party to end all parties this September.
