Their very survival is based on suppressing the vote. They know that the majority of Americans would never support the GOP's self-serving agenda: tax cuts for the rich, corporate welfare, a war for oil, etc. So the Republicans bet it all on getting out their base while suppressing the turnout of the middle and lower classes. That explains, at least in part, why so few people in this country bother to vote�even for the Presidency. On the other hand, a staggering 95% of Australia's registered voters turn out on election day. The reason? Those who fail to cast a ballot are fined and possibly even imprisoned. Some Americans might find such penalties harsh, but consider this: Paying taxes is mandatory, as it should be. We need to collect money to help keep our nation great. Voting is no less important with regard to maintaining our form of government. Is punishing citizens who don't support our democratic process any different from punishing those who cheat on their taxes? Making voting mandatory would be the Democrats' chance to contribute something of lasting value to our country. Sadly, they have pretty much failed to make any other contribution of note since retaking Congress a year ago.
