Band-aid action by the Federal Reserve will only push back the day of reckoning, not prevent it. Insurgent activity in Afghanistan grows stronger, our former friends in Europe and elsewhere boil with resentment, the Bush Justice Department refuses to pursue the criminal activity of our corrupt government officials, and the Senate is seeking retroactive immunity for illegal spying conducted by telecommunications companies. How ironic that even as this illegitimate President was delivering his final State of the Union address (itself a series of lies), this lame duck made clear his intention to continue violating the law. With four separate signing statements on that same day, Bush reserved the right to: (1) not probe contracting fraud (as in Iraq); (2) not protect whistleblowers; (3) not provide Congress with intelligence documents; and, finally, (4) he reserved the right to build permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. So how have Democrats on Capitol Hill responded? With silence! Many of you, no doubt, feel helpless in the face of this. But you must not lose faith. Continue to write your representatives and senators. Your letters and e-mails are much more effective than you think. In fact, they are the only thing in Washington that your legislators will respond to, especially if they think their constituents are ready to throw them out of office. Larry Flynt, Publisher
