We owe a lot to the French: fine champagne, perfume, the Statue of Liberty and a great deal of our language—particularly the vocabulary of intimate fashions. The word for lingerie, for example: In France, women's undergarments originally were made of linen, or linge. The collective noun formed from linge is lingerie. Peignoir, chemise, camisole, bustier, brassiere, garter, petticoat—all entered the English language via French, as did chenille, lace and denim. But no matter what it's called or of what it's made, lingerie has world-wide appeal among both men and women, as indicated by the unprecedented success of Playboy's annual lingerie special editions. The demand for these photographic collections has resulted in the decision to publish them on a bimonthly basis, beginning with this issue. Merci beaucoup.
